Honestly, it's hard to find a game that's exactly like Subnautica, you either get a little bit of this, or a little bit of that. Sure, you lose the survival aspect, so it's not a 1:1 copy, but it does have a ton of other stuff in common. You know, finding secrets, exploring ancient ruins, different areas and biomes, pushing yourself a little bit farther, a little bit deeper. And it's all that extra stuff that makes Subnautica so good, and it's that same exact stuff that Outer Wilds has in common with it. Survival games are a dime a dozen (and they're usually shit) but Subnautica is so much more than that. The fact that it's not just a survival game is what makes Subnautica so great, in my opinion. It helps you get a few feet deeper, it helps you explore more dangerous areas. Everything you do in that game, you do it because it helps you go one step further. Personally, I would say exploration is the main mechanic of the game, it's why you finish the game. It's at least a better suggestion than half the suggestions in here.īut you probably don't go back to Subnautica because you really like catching fish. It's definitely not the same game, but it scratches a lot of those same itches. I know I played Outer Wilds after playing Subnautica and I got a lot of Subnautica vibes from it. The only part that doesn't apply is the part I bolded. Subnautica has a large variety of unique biomes to ol and sometimes deadly creatures and a home we could build ourselves and modify according to our needs, can control big vehicles similar to a mobile base and with awesome music as a cherry on top. But that's not really what OP is looking for: If you were looking for a new game because you loved the open world survival aspect of Subnautica, then Outer Wilds is a bad recommendation. Big open world waiting to be explored, mysteries to uncover, "Fear of the unknown", etc. There's a whole story that you slowly have to piece together too as you find different pieces of information.Īnd Outer Wilds is the same thing. It's about looking around every corner to slowly uncover the mysteries of this world that you've crashlanded on. To me, Subnautica is primarily a game about exploration. I also didn't check if you can build vehicles at some point, so far it's just bases, equipment and unmanned rockets. Very ambitious, very promising, but obviously unfinished. Your goal is to terraform a desolate planet from scratch. There's a new game coming to early access called PlanetCrafter. If it's more about the building aspect and Sci-Fi, Space Engineers and Empyrion are interesting calls, but the stories are lacking in both, nothing scary here either. Stranded Deep and Raft are some water-related survival games, with not too much aggression and the rafts/ships can become pretty big, but not so much "fear of the unknown". There are a lot of survival games that give you a similar vibe, but they're all lacking certain aspects in comparison. Also the fact that it's an entirely peacful approach (apart from killing fishies to survive and the deterring weapons) is special as well as the eerieness. Subnautica is very unique in that aspect.
